An energy recovery device (ERD) captures the residual pressure in SWRO brine and returns it to the feed circuit, slashing high-pressure pump duty. The two dominant types are isobaric pressure exchangers (ERI PX) and turbocharger ERDs (FEDCO HPB). Brine exits the membrane array at 55–65 bar — only 3–5 bar below feed pressure. The ERD couples this brine to part of the feed stream, transferring pressure directly (PX) or via a turbo-pump shaft (FEDCO). ERDs are the single biggest efficiency lever in SWRO. They cut specific energy consumption by 50–60% and are mandatory on any commercial-scale plant. PX wins on efficiency (97% vs 85%) and is preferred above 50 m³/h. Turbocharger HPB is cheaper, simpler, and ideal for small-to-mid systems where the energy delta is small. PX rotors are bearingless and effectively maintenance-free for 10+ years. Turbocharger HPB needs occasional bearing/seal service every 30,000–50,000 hours. Yes — ERD retrofits are one of the highest-ROI brownfield upgrades in desal, often paying back in 18 months. ForeverPure has supplied desalination, high-pressure pumps, and energy-recovery devices to commercial and industrial customers since 2003.
