Do I need a pressure regulator on my Cat pump?

Yes — Cat Pumps strongly recommends an unloader or pressure regulator on every triplex pump installation. Triplex pumps are positive-displacement and will continue to build pressure when flow is blocked (closed spray gun, closed valve). An unloader vents excess flow safely back to the reservoir or inlet, protecting the pump and plumbing.

What inlet filter micron rating should I use?

Cat Pumps recommends a minimum 50-mesh (around 300 micron) strainer on every inlet. For finer particulate protection, use 100-mesh (150 micron). Clean or replace filters on schedule — a blocked filter starves the pump and accelerates seal and valve wear.

When do I need a pulsation dampener?

Triplex pumps have three discharge pulses per shaft revolution, creating ~5–10% pressure variation at the discharge. A pulsation dampener smooths this pulsation, reducing vibration, extending hose/fitting life, and giving steadier readings on pressure gauges. Recommended on any installation with long piping runs or gauge-controlled processes.

Can I use any off-the-shelf pressure regulator with a Cat pump?
