A turbocharger ERD (e.g., FEDCO HPB, HP HEMI) uses a single-shaft turbine-pump to extract energy from the SWRO brine stream and use it to boost feed pressure. Efficiency is 80–88% — lower than a PX but with simpler hydraulics and no electrical drive. Brine enters the turbine side and spins a shared shaft. The same shaft drives a centrifugal pump impeller on the feed side, boosting the feed pressure delivered to the membrane array. Turbocharger ERDs are the most cost-effective energy recovery option for small-to-mid SWRO systems (2,000–50,000 GPD) and for retrofits where space is tight. FEDCO HPB units run 80–88% efficient across their operating range, with peak efficiency at design point. They reduce booster duty significantly but do not replace it — the HP pump still supplies the pressure differential across the membranes. The HP HEMI 1000 handles ~1,000 GPM brine flow in a compact super-duplex housing under 1 m³ envelope. ForeverPure has supplied desalination, high-pressure pumps, and energy-recovery devices to commercial and industrial customers since 2003.
