What a recirculation pump does

In a house or building with a long run from the water heater, the water sitting in the pipe goes cold between draw-offs. A recirculation circulator keeps that loop moving, so hot water is present at the fixture when the tap opens. The saving is water, not energy — typically thousands of gallons a year in a home with a long run.

Dedicated return line — the pump sits at the heater and circulates through a return pipe. The efficient arrangement, if the pipe exists.
Comfort valve retrofit — where no return line exists, a bypass valve at the far fixture uses the cold line as the return. This is the common retrofit.
Timer and temperature control — run the loop only when the building is occupied, rather than continuously.

Common questions

Do I need a dedicated return line?

No. With a Comfort valve fitted at the furthest fixture, the existing cold line acts as the return — which is what makes this a practical retrofit.

Will a recirculation pump raise my energy bill?

A little, since the loop loses heat. Running it on a timer or on temperature rather than continuously keeps that small, and it saves a great deal of water.
