Method. Feed flow = permeate ÷ recovery; brine flow = feed − permeate. PX devices are sized on brine flow and run in parallel, so the array is the smallest count of one model that covers the brine flow within its published range. High-pressure pump duty is permeate flow at feed pressure; the circulation booster is estimated at 3 bar and 75% efficiency; pump and motor efficiencies are assumed at 90% and 93%. Specific energy is total absorbed power ÷ permeate flow. Actual figures vary with feed salinity, temperature, membrane type and age, fouling allowance and pipework losses.
