Toray Ultrafiltration (UF) Membranes
Toray HFU, HFUG, and HSU hollow-fiber ultrafiltration membrane modules — in stock from an authorized distributor. Toray UF modules use PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) hollow fiber at 0.01 µm nominal pore size to remove suspended solids, turbidity, bacteria, protozoa (Giardia, Cryptosporidium), and most viruses — producing consistently low-SDI water for drinking water, wastewater reuse, and as pretreatment ahead of reverse osmosis. ForeverPure ships Toray UF modules and complete UF skids with free engineering sizing.

What Ultrafiltration Removes
Ultrafiltration is a physical barrier — a hollow-fiber membrane with ~0.01 micron pores that filters by size, not chemistry. A Toray UF module removes:
- Suspended solids & turbidity — produces <0.1 NTU, low-SDI filtrate
- Bacteria & protozoa — Giardia, Cryptosporidium, and most bacteria (>4-log)
- Viruses — substantial removal; the F-HFUG 0.005 µm module tightens this further
- Colloids, silt, and macromolecules — without coagulant carryover
UF does not remove dissolved salts (TDS) — that is the job of reverse osmosis. UF and RO work together: UF as pretreatment delivers clean, low-fouling feed that protects RO membranes and holds recovery.
Applications
Municipal and industrial drinking water, surface-water and seawater RO pretreatment, wastewater reclamation and reuse, food & beverage clarification, process and cooling water, and pre-treatment for desalination plants where consistent low-SDI feed is critical.
Ultrafiltration vs Reverse Osmosis
| Ultrafiltration (UF) | Reverse Osmosis (RO) | |
|---|---|---|
| Pore size | ~0.01 µm | ~0.0001 µm (nonporous) |
| Removes | Solids, turbidity, bacteria, viruses | Dissolved salts (TDS), ions |
| Operating pressure | Low (~15–45 psi) | High (200–1,200 psi) |
| Typical role | Pretreatment / clarification | Desalination / demineralization |

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the pore size of a Toray UF membrane?
A: 0.01 micron nominal for the HFU/HFUG/HSU series, and 0.005 micron for the tighter F-HFUG-2020AN for finer virus removal.
Q: Can Toray UF be used as RO pretreatment?
A: Yes — UF is one of the most effective RO pretreatments, delivering consistent low-SDI feed that reduces membrane fouling and protects recovery. We size UF + RO trains together.
Q: Pressurized or submerged — which do I need?
A: Pressurized modules (HFU/HFUG) suit skid-mounted and packaged systems; submerged modules (HSU) suit open-tank/MBR designs. Send us your flow and feed water and we'll recommend the model.
