CRE, CRIE, CRNE E-Pumps (Variable Speed)

CRE, CRIE and CRNE are the Grundfos CR vertical multistage pumps with an integrated variable-speed MGE motor — constant pressure without an external VFD, a panel, or the wiring between them.

What the E adds

  • Constant pressure — the pump varies its own speed to hold a setpoint as demand changes, instead of throttling across a valve.
  • Soft start — no inrush, no water hammer, which matters on membranes and on older pipework.
  • Energy — affinity laws are unforgiving in a good way: reducing speed reduces power by roughly the cube. Any duty that spends time below full flow saves.
  • No VFD to specify, mount, cool or commission — the drive is on the motor and matched to the pump at the factory.

Which one

The letter before the E is the material, exactly as on the fixed-speed range:

SeriesMaterialsDuty
CRECast iron head and base, 304 stainless internals Clean water, HVAC, boiler feed, general boosting
CRIEAISI 304 stainless throughout Potable, food and beverage, washdown
CRNEAISI 316 stainless throughout RO, seawater, chlorides, aggressive chemicals

For reverse osmosis, specify CRNE. Chloride is what kills 304 stainless, and RO concentrate is where chloride concentrates.

Common questions

What does the E mean in CRE, CRIE and CRNE?

An integrated Grundfos MGE variable-frequency motor. The pump controls its own speed.

Do I still need an external VFD?

No. The drive is built into the motor and pre-matched to the pump.

Is an E-Pump worth the extra cost?

On variable demand, generally yes — the energy saved on part load usually repays the difference within a few years. On flat, continuous, full-flow duty the fixed-speed pump is the better economics.

Which E-Pump is used for reverse osmosis?

CRNE, in 316 stainless.
