The Danfoss APP 78/1500 (code 180B7808) is an axial piston high-pressure pump for large seawater reverse osmosis trains. It is oil-free and water-lubricated — the pumped water itself lubricates the bearings, so there is no oil circuit to maintain and no path for oil to reach the process. All wetted parts are Duplex and Super Duplex stainless steel.

Why an Axial Piston Pump

Flow from a positive-displacement axial piston pump is set by displacement and shaft speed rather than by system pressure, so output stays stable as membranes foul and feed pressure rises. A centrifugal pump's output falls away as head increases; this one does not.

  • Oil-free — lubricated by the pumped water, so no oil changes and no contamination path to the permeate.
  • No high-pressure mechanical seal — a common wear point on other pump types is simply absent.
  • Duplex / Super Duplex throughout the wetted path for chloride resistance.
  • Field serviceable — Danfoss supplies purpose-designed tool kits and service parts, which we stock.

Danfoss publishes measured efficiency for this range: 89% at 1000 rpm, 90% at 1200 rpm, 89% at 1500 rpm, at maximum pressure after the system has been commissioned and run in.

Frequently Asked Questions

What flow will the APP 78/1500 give me?
Flow is proportional to shaft speed — see the table and the flow curve in the gallery. Maximum continuous speed is 1,500 rpm. Use our Danfoss pump selector for a first pass and we will confirm against your membrane projection.
Does it come with a motor?
No — this is the bare pump. Danfoss suggests around 160 kW (250 HP) at maximum speed and pressure. Tell us your duty point and supply voltage and we will quote the complete motor unit.
What inlet pressure does it need?
Between 2 and 5 barg (29–73 psig) in operation, with a peak of 10 barg (145 psig). Running the pump starved is one of the fastest ways to damage it.
What filtration does it need?
Proper filtration is a warranty condition, not a suggestion. Because water has very low viscosity, particles that would be harmless in an oil-lubricated pump cause wear here. Follow the filtration specification in the data sheet and change cartridges on schedule.
How is it shipped?
At 432 lb dry this ships as LTL freight, not parcel. We confirm crate dimensions and delivery requirements — including whether you need a liftgate — before despatch.
Need help sizing or a quotation? ForeverPure is an authorised Danfoss distributor and has shipped desalination systems since 1997. Send us your feed flow, recovery rate, salinity and operating pressure and our engineers will confirm the pump size, the matching motor and any iSave energy recovery.
