The Danfoss APP 10.2 (code 180B3010) is an axial piston high-pressure pump built for seawater and brackish-water reverse osmosis. It is oil-free and water-lubricated — the pumped water itself lubricates the bearings, so there is no oil circuit to maintain and no risk of oil contaminating the permeate. All wetted parts are Duplex and Super Duplex stainless steel for seawater corrosion resistance.

Why an Axial Piston Pump for SWRO

In a positive-displacement axial piston pump, flow is set by displacement and shaft speed rather than by system pressure, so output stays stable as membranes foul and feed pressure rises. That matters in SWRO, where a centrifugal pump's output falls away as head increases.

  • Oil-free — lubricated by the pumped water, so no oil changes and no contamination path to the permeate.
  • No high-pressure mechanical seal — one of the most common wear points on other pump types is simply absent.
  • Duplex / Super Duplex throughout the wetted path for seawater chloride resistance.
  • Field serviceable — Danfoss supplies purpose-designed tool kits and service parts.

Danfoss reports overall efficiency above 90% measured across more than a dozen operating SWRO plants; see their video above for the measurement basis. Actual efficiency depends on speed, pressure and system design.

Frequently Asked Questions

What flow will the APP 10.2 give me?
Flow is proportional to speed: 5.83 m³/h at 1000 rpm and 8.75 m³/h at 1500 rpm, or 30.82 gpm at 1200 rpm and 46.23 gpm at 1800 rpm — all at maximum pressure. Use our Danfoss pump selector for a first pass and we will confirm against your membrane projection.
Does it come with a motor?
No. 180B3010 is the bare pump. You order the motor, coupling and bell housing separately — Danfoss recommends a 22 kW (IEC 180 L-4) or 30 kW (IEC 200 L-4) motor depending on your duty point. Tell us your speed, pressure and supply voltage and we will quote the complete motor unit.
Do I need a boost pump on the inlet?
Inlet pressure must stay between 0.5 and 5 barg. Above 1500 rpm the pump must be boosted to 2–5 barg — running it starved at high speed is one of the fastest ways to damage it.
What filtration does it need?
Proper filtration is a warranty condition, not a recommendation. Because water has very low viscosity, particles that would be harmless in an oil-lubricated pump cause wear here. Follow the filtration specification in §9.1 of the data sheet and change cartridges on schedule.
What do I do when the system shuts down?
Always flush with freshwater. For a stop of more than one day, flush with permeate while rotating the pump for 10 seconds — flushing through the flushing valve without turning the pump does not clean the inside. Compatible biocide may be used, the same as for the membranes.
What is the warranty?
Danfoss guarantees 8,000 hours of service-free operation, to a maximum of 18 months from date of production, provided the pump has run to Danfoss specifications. Running outside the speed, temperature, inlet or outlet pressure limits will shorten life and can void it. Danfoss recommends yearly inspections.
Can I run several in parallel?
Yes — parallel-coupled APP pumps with iSave energy recovery are a standard Danfoss configuration for larger trains. See the parallel-coupling design guide linked above, and talk to us about the layout.
