Energy recovery devices (ERDs) capture hydraulic energy from the high-pressure brine reject stream of a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) system and transfer it back to the membrane feed, reducing the demand on the high-pressure pump. Pressure-exchanger ERDs can recover a large share of the energy that would otherwise be lost across the membrane array.
