FEDCO HPB-60 Hydraulic Pressure Booster Turbocharger Energy Recovery Device
Manufactured by Fluid Equipment Development Company (FEDCO), Monroe, Michigan, USA — supplied by ForeverPure Corporation, an authorized FEDCO distributor based in Santa Clara, California.
The FEDCO HPB is a hydraulic energy-recovery turbocharger that captures pressure energy from the SWRO brine reject stream and uses it to boost feed pressure into the membrane train, reducing the size and energy consumption of the high-pressure feed pump by up to 50%. The HPB family leads the turbocharger ERD category in tested transfer efficiency, exceeding 80% across the operating envelope.

Theory of Operation
Brine exits the membrane vessels at near-feed pressure. Inside the HPB, this brine drives a single-stage radial turbine wheel that is direct-coupled (one rotor, no gearbox) to a single-stage centrifugal pump impeller on the feed side. The brine's pressure energy is converted to shaft work and immediately re-imparted to the feed stream as a pressure boost. An integral variable-area brine control valve sets brine flow without an external valve. FEDCO's patented RotorFlo™ design provides internal hydraulic lubrication of non-metallic bearings, so the HPB has no external lube circuit.

Sizing & Selection
Model number convention: nominal feed flow in m³/h. Best efficiency is typically achieved within ±20% of nominal flow — for duty points outside this range, consult ForeverPure to confirm the correct frame size.
Provide your feed flow, required boost / discharge pressure, feed TDS, recovery, and temperature with your quote request. ForeverPure's applications team returns the correct model, options, lead time, and project-specific pricing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the FEDCO HPB-60?
The FEDCO HPB is a hydraulic energy-recovery turbocharger that captures pressure energy from the SWRO brine reject stream and uses it to boost feed pressure into the membrane train, reducing the size and energy consumption of the high-pressure feed pump by up to 50%. The HPB family leads the turbocharger ERD category in tested transfer efficiency, exceeding 80% across the operating envelope.
What is the FEDCO HPB-60 used for?
Typical applications include seawater reverse osmosis (swro) energy recovery; high-recovery brackish-water ro; interstage pressure boosting in biturbo high-recovery ro trains. Industries served: municipal desalination, hotels, islands, and resorts, marine / offshore.
What materials of construction does the FEDCO HPB-60 use?
Wetted parts are casing & rotor: duplex ss 2205 or super duplex ss 2507. casing bolts: 316 ss. o-rings: buna-n., providing corrosion resistance suited to seawater and chloride-rich brackish-water service.
How does a FEDCO turbocharger ERD compare to an isobaric pressure exchanger (PX, iSave, APM)?
FEDCO turbocharger ERDs (HPB, HP-HEMI) recover brine pressure energy through a hydraulic turbine that directly boosts the feed stream — a single rotating assembly with no piston cycling and no brine-feed mixing. Isobaric pressure exchangers (Energy Recovery Inc. PX, Danfoss iSave, Danfoss APM) instead transfer pressure through ceramic rotors or pistons between brine and feed streams. Turbochargers are mechanically simpler, have zero brine-to-feed mixing, are well-suited to small-to-medium SWRO and packaged plants, and FEDCO's HPB demonstrates 83%+ transfer efficiency in the field.
Where can I get the FEDCO HPB-60 datasheet, performance curve, and pricing?
