The Energy Recovery PX Q180 Pressure Exchanger® is a positive-displacement energy recovery device for seawater reverse osmosis. A single ceramic rotor transfers pressure energy directly from the high-pressure reject stream to the incoming feed, at up to 97% peak efficiency, handling 100-180 gpm (22.7-40.8 m3/hr) per device. There is no gearbox, no pistons and no lubricating oil — the rotor is the only moving part.

How the PX Pressure Exchanger Works

A ceramic rotor turns inside a sleeve. Each duct is alternately opened to the high-pressure brine leaving the membranes and to the low-pressure feed entering the system. The high-pressure stream pushes directly against the feed water inside the duct, transferring its pressure with almost no loss; the duct then rotates, the depressurised stream is flushed to drain, and the cycle repeats. Because the transfer is direct hydraulic displacement rather than a mechanical conversion, efficiency is very high and the only moving part is the rotor.

Where the PX-Q180 Fits

The PX-Q180 is specified on brine (concentrate) flow, not permeate — the pressure exchanger sits on the reject stream. ERI rates it for 100–180 gpm of brine at up to 1,200 psi, at 97% efficiency.

At the 40–45% recovery typical of seawater systems, one unit at full flow supports roughly 172,800–212,073 GPD of permeate (654–803 m³/day). That places a single PX-Q180 in resort and hotel complexes, small municipal supply, food and beverage process water, and containerised plants at the larger end of the range.

PX units are installed in parallel arrays, so larger plants simply use more of them — four PX-Q180 units cover about 2,616–3,211 m³/day on the same basis. Below 100 gpm of brine, step down to a smaller model rather than run this one under its minimum.

Capacity figures are indicative, derived from the rated brine flow at typical recovery. Actual output depends on your feed salinity, temperature, membrane configuration and recovery rate — send us your design conditions and we will confirm the model and the number of units.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many PX-Q180 units do I need?
Size on brine flow, not permeate flow. Each device handles 100-180 gpm (22.7-40.8 m3/hr). Divide your brine flow by the device maximum and round up; multiple units run in parallel in an array. Send us your flow diagram and we will confirm the arrangement.
What pre-filtration is required?
20 µm nominal filtration on the feed. The ceramic rotor is extremely hard, but upstream filtration protects the running clearances and holds efficiency at specification over the life of the device.
Does it need a motor?
No. The rotor is driven by the flow itself — there is no motor, gearbox, timing belt or oil system. You do need a booster pump to make up the pressure differential across the device, plus a high-pressure feed pump sized for permeate flow.
What maintenance is involved?
One moving part and no dynamic seals in the flow path. Routine maintenance is periodic inspection and, over a long service life, replacement of the ceramic cartridge (65 lbs. (29 kg), shipped separately). Full installation, commissioning and service intervals are in the technical documentation above.
How much energy does it save?
Recovering pressure from the reject stream typically cuts SWRO energy consumption substantially — for seawater systems, around 60% against a plant with no energy recovery. Actual savings depend on feed salinity, temperature, recovery rate and membrane condition. Tell us your duty and we will calculate it.
