The Danfoss iSave 40 (code 180U0002) is a complete seawater reverse-osmosis energy recovery unit supplied on a vertical base frame with a NEMA 286TC 15 kW (20 HP), 6-pole motor. It combines a rotary pressure exchanger and a booster pump in one assembly, recovering pressure energy from the membrane reject stream and returning it to the feed — typically cutting SWRO energy consumption by around 60% against a system with no energy recovery.

How the iSave Works

The iSave combines a rotary pressure exchanger, which transfers pressure energy directly from the high-pressure reject brine to the incoming low-pressure feed, with a booster pump that makes up the small pressure differential across the exchanger, both driven by the motor on a common shaft. Because the energy transfer is direct hydraulic displacement rather than a mechanical conversion, the high-pressure feed pump only has to supply the permeate flow.

The iSave 40 delivers up to 41 m³/h (180 gpm) at the high-pressure outlet. All wetted parts are made of high corrosion-resistant materials including Super Duplex stainless steel, and there is no high-pressure mechanical seal and no need for high-pressure flow meters.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I size the iSave 40 for my plant?
Size on the brine (concentrate) flow, not permeate. Use our Danfoss pump & energy recovery selector for a first pass, then send us your flow, recovery and pressure and we will confirm the selection.
What is the difference between 180U0002 and 180U0012?
Same iSave 40 with the same motor. 180U0002 is the vertical build; 180U0012 (horizontal) is the other orientation. Vertical saves floor area, horizontal lowers the centre of gravity and simplifies service access. Choose on the space you have.
What pre-filtration does it need?
5 micron melt-blown, 85% efficient nominal filtration on the feed. This protects the running clearances in the pressure exchanger and holds efficiency at specification over the life of the unit.
Does it need a separate booster pump?
No. The booster pump is built into this unit and driven by the same motor. You still need a high-pressure feed pump — sized for permeate flow, since the iSave supplies the rest by recovering brine energy.
Does it need a VFD?
Yes. A variable frequency drive or soft starter is required to ramp the unit up — inertia and stick-slip friction mean starting torque can otherwise exceed the maximum allowable. Danfoss FC 301/FC 302 drives are suitable; the VFD must deliver 140% start torque. The drive also provides overload protection.
How is it shipped?
At 715 lb this ships as LTL freight, not parcel. We confirm crate dimensions and delivery requirements — including whether you need a liftgate — before despatch.
Why the NEMA version?
NEMA-motor iSave builds are ordered through Danfoss US and suit 460 V / 60 Hz North American supplies. The IEC-motor equivalents are built for 400 V / 50 Hz. Ask us if you are unsure which suits your site.
