The PX PowerTrain™ is Energy Recovery’s pre-engineered energy recovery device (ERD) array. It combines PX® Pressure Exchanger® devices with frame support and ancillary equipment into one compact, ready-to-install package for a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) train — so the array design, mounting and manifolding work is delivered with the equipment rather than engineered on site.

What the PX PowerTrain Replaces

On a conventional SWRO train the ERD array is engineered project by project: the number of PX devices is calculated, a support frame is fabricated, and the high-pressure and low-pressure manifolds are designed, built and commissioned on site. Each of those steps is an opportunity for a flow imbalance between devices, and each adds site labour.

The PX PowerTrain delivers that scope as a product. Energy Recovery designs the array to its own guidelines for PX operation, with flow paths optimized across the devices, and ships it on its frame with the ancillary equipment fitted. Installation reduces to four connections. Because the array is designed rather than assembled from parts on site, the flow distribution between devices is set by the manufacturer rather than by field piping.

How the PX Pressure Exchanger Works

A PX transfers pressure directly from the high-pressure RO brine to the incoming feed inside a rotating ceramic rotor, with no intermediate conversion to mechanical or electrical energy. That direct exchange is why the PX reaches up to 98% efficiency and why a PX array carries the largest single share of the energy saving in a modern SWRO plant. The PowerTrain uses the same devices — it changes how they are packaged, not how they work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which PX PowerTrain model do I need?
Energy Recovery does not publish discrete PowerTrain model numbers. Each array is configured to the train, so sizing starts from your process data rather than from a model list. Send us the feed flow, permeate capacity, recovery rate and membrane pressure and we will have the array sized with Energy Recovery. The published line covers 182–682 m³/h (800–3,000 gpm) at up to 83 bar, with train production capacity from 3,000 m³/day.
How is this different from buying PX devices separately?
The devices are the same. What differs is scope: with individual PX units you specify the count, design and fabricate the frame, and design and build the manifolds. With the PowerTrain, the frame, the ancillary equipment and the flow paths between devices are engineered and assembled by Energy Recovery, and the array arrives with four connection points. What is the smallest plant that can use one?
Energy Recovery states train production capacity from 3,000 m³/day. Below that the array flow falls under the published range and individual PX devices are the appropriate product.
Can I get a 3D model for the plant layout?
Yes. Energy Recovery publishes 3D models of the PX PowerTrain for integration into plant design. Request one through us with your array size and we will obtain it.
Can the pumps be supplied with it?
Yes. Energy Recovery states the PX PowerTrain can be combined with its SWRO pumps for an end-to-end pumping and ERD solution, so the high-pressure pump, circulation pump and ERD array come from one supplier on one scope of supply.
Why is there no price shown?
The PowerTrain is built to the train, so there is no shelf price. Pricing, lead time and the configuration drawing are issued on quotation.
