The PX PowerTrain™ is Energy Recovery’s pre-engineered energy recovery device (ERD) array. It combines PX® Pressure Exchanger® devices with frame support and ancillary equipment into one compact, ready-to-install package for a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) train — so the array design, mounting and manifolding work is delivered with the equipment rather than engineered on site.

What the PX PowerTrain Replaces
On a conventional SWRO train the ERD array is engineered project by project: the number of PX devices is calculated, a support frame is fabricated, and the high-pressure and low-pressure manifolds are designed, built and commissioned on site. Each of those steps is an opportunity for a flow imbalance between devices, and each adds site labour.
The PX PowerTrain delivers that scope as a product. Energy Recovery designs the array to its own guidelines for PX operation, with flow paths optimized across the devices, and ships it on its frame with the ancillary equipment fitted. Installation reduces to four connections. Because the array is designed rather than assembled from parts on site, the flow distribution between devices is set by the manufacturer rather than by field piping.
How the PX Pressure Exchanger Works
A PX transfers pressure directly from the high-pressure RO brine to the incoming feed inside a rotating ceramic rotor, with no intermediate conversion to mechanical or electrical energy. That direct exchange is why the PX reaches up to 98% efficiency and why a PX array carries the largest single share of the energy saving in a modern SWRO plant. The PowerTrain uses the same devices — it changes how they are packaged, not how they work.
